Travel details for airfare and hotel

Directions to MIT (Fri, Sat, Sun, 26-28, 2004 -- MIT Stratton Student Center -- 84 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge, MA 02139) Map or the MIT MAP

By Subway: From the airport, take the MBTA bus to the Blue line subway in bound to Government Center, switch to the Green line to Park Street (one stop), and switch to the Red line towards Alewife (outbound), get out at either the Kendall/MIT Station or to the Central Square Station, both of which are a short walk from the MIT campus. The walk from Central Square takes about 10 minutes and takes you right down Massachusetts Avenue. The Kendall/MIT Station is on the edge of the east end of campus, and as soon as you enter an MIT building you can get to the other buildings without going outside. See the subway map (trains are simply denoted by "inbound" as going into the center, and "outbound" as going away from the center). Fare is $1.25 and you can buy a token at the gate. Under normal conditions the ride will take about one-half hour.

By Bus: The #1 or Dudley bus stops at MIT on Massachusetts Avenue and provides transportation to Central Square and Harvard Square. The MIT stop is at a large crosswalk with a stop light. On one side of the street are steps leading up to large Ionic columns and the Small Dome of MIT, on the other side of the street is the MIT Stratton Student Center and Kresge Oval (an open, grass-covered area).

By Taxi: Taxi fare from the airport is about $15. During non-rush hour, the taxi ride will take about 15 minutes. During rush hour, the ride could take 30 minutes.

By Car: See directions from the MIT website. Please note that parking is hard to find near the Campus, but the weekends should have parking along Memorial Drive (parallels the river and crosses Massachusetts Avenue). Public transportation is recommended.

Directions to Boston City Hall (6PM-8PM, Fri, Mar 26, 2004, One City Hall Plaza, Boston, MA 02201 -- Third Floor Foyer (at escalators) Map. See a 3D model of this architectural wonder

By Subway: Take the MBTA green or blue line (direct from the airport) inbound to the Government Center stop and exit onto City Hall Plaza. You can also take the Orange line inbound to the State Street stop and cross State Street to City Hall Plaza. City Hall will be the building right in front of you. See the subway map (trains are simply denoted by "inbound" as going into the center, and "outbound" as going away from the center). Fare is $1.25 and you can buy a token at the gate.

By Taxi: Taxi fare from the airport is about $15. During non-rush hour, the taxi ride will take about 15 minutes. During rush hour, the ride could take 30 minutes.

By Car: See directions from the City of Boston website. Please note that parking is hard to find at Boston City Hall, with the exception of relatively expensive parking garages. Public transportation is recommended.

Directions to Hyatt Regency, 575 Memorial Drive, Cambridge, Massachusetts, 02139, +1-617-492-1234, Map

From Logan International Airport: Follow signs to Boston via Sumner Tunnel. After you come out of the tunnel take exit 26A - "Storrow Drive/ Back Bay/Cambridge." Keep left, go onto Storrow Drive. Go 3/4 mile and take exit on left-hand side (Government Center/Kendall Square). At the top of the ramp take a right over the Longfellow Bridge, at the end of the bridge turn right onto Memorial Drive West (Rt.3 North). Stay on Memorial Drive approximately 1 and 1/2 miles; at the third traffic light turn right, the entrance to the Hyatt will be on your left.

Directions to Club Cafe, 209 Columbus Avenue, Boston, MA 02116, Map

By Subway: Take the MBTA green line to Arlington or Copley and walk to Columbus Avenue. Or take the MBTA orange line to Back Bay Station, and exit to Clarendon and walk to Columbus. See the subway map (trains are simply denoted by "inbound" as going into the center, and "outbound" as going away from the center). Fare is $1.25 and you can buy a token at the gate.

Words of Advice

There's no need to rent a car -- as long as you'll want to stay in the city, parking just becomes a hassle and you'll end up racking up parking tickets and wasting time finding parking. Boston and Cambridge are very well connected and are really part of the same city (shhh! Don't tell anyone from Cambridge). The conference is actually at MIT, right next to the Hotel. And, MIT is just right next to the bridge (also called the Harvard Bridge and/or the Mass Ave Bridge) that connects (and crosses the famous Charles River) into Boston's Back Bay (5 minute walk) aka yuppie-ville, which is right next to Boston's South-End, aka gay-ville. Plus, the subway (also known as the "T" here in Boston) is super especially the "red line" that runs from Boston/Cambridge. Unlike other big cities, we like to refer to Boston/Cambridge as a "town" with big city benefits. And cab rides are typically $5-$10 and split between shared rides, it's relatively cheap.
